Encore Boston Harbor is taking the temperatures of guests, with their permission, who show symptoms of illness amid the rise in COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts, representatives of the Everett casino say.

“Safeguarding the health of our guests and employees is of the utmost importance. We have started to take the temperature of guests who are exhibiting symptoms of illness — coughing, sneezing, sweating, etc,” the casino said in a statement.

“With their permission, we are discretely taking their temperature with a non-contact, digital thermometer,” the statement read. “Guests with a temperature of 100 degrees or higher will be asked to leave our property and encouraged to seek medical attention for further screening or treatment.”

The practice is among several precautions Encore is taking to ensure the hotel and casino remains free of the contagious virus, which has recently surged in cases across the commonwealth and nation.

Casino employees are routinely sanitizing “high-traffic public areas,” including slot machines, handrails, elevator buttons, and faucets, among other surfaces, according to the statement. Touch points and flat surfaces in guest and employee transportation — such as harbor shuttles, limos, and buses — are disinfected in between every trip.

“All of our gaming supplies (e.g. chips, dice, cards) are cleaned, refreshed, or discarded on an ongoing basis throughout each day,” the casino said.

An in-house director of health and food safety works closely with the City of Everett health inspector to make sure standards of hygiene and food-handling practices “are upheld during this time,” according to representatives. All restaurants remain open and fully operational.

Precautionary measures include increased frequency of shared utensil sanitation, frequent cleaning of shared surfaces in both back and front-of-house areas, and a “rigorous routine of hand washing” that all food and beverage service employees follow, the casino said.

“All departments have implemented hand washing or sanitizing procedures to take place multiple times during the employee’s shift,” the statement said.

Employees feeling ill are encouraged to stay home, and employees are prohibited from coming to work with a respiratory illness, according to the casino.
